At The IN Group, we’re passionate about creating an environment where our people – and the leaders they aspire to be – can continue to grow. That’s why we were delighted to host Dr Hayley Lewis, a Chartered Occupational Psychologist and award-winning lecturer in organisational psychology, for a thought-provoking session on Brilliant Communication for Leaders.
With more than 25 years’ experience leading teams and advising organisations through complex change, Hayley specialises in leadership, culture and communication. Her engaging keynote brought together over 40 business leaders from across TIG and reminded us that great leadership isn’t just about setting direction. It’s about how we connect with each other – the conversations we have, the culture we create and the trust we build.
Key insights from the session
- Communication shapes culture. Effective communication is a proven driver of engagement and wellbeing across all generations – and it matters more than ever to Gen Z.
- Quality beats quantity. The best leaders focus on clear, memorable messages that people can easily recall.
- Listen first. “All good dialogue begins with listening,” as Sarah Rozenthuler puts it. Great leaders not only listen to what’s said but also to what’s left unsaid.
- Find your influencers. Only around 3% of people in any business are true “super influencers”. Identifying and empowering them can transform how messages land.
- The 7 Cs of communication: Clear, Complete, Concise, Courteous, Considerate, Correct and Concrete.
We explored how leaders can adapt their style, show empathy and give constructive feedback – even when conversations are challenging. Dr Lewis also highlighted how psychological safety enables people to speak up, challenge ideas and share their own perspectives.
